Effect of Random Impurities on Fluctuation-Driven First Order Transitions

چکیده

We analyse the effect of quenched uncorrelated randomness coupling to the local energy density of a model consisting of N coupled two-dimensional Ising models. For N > 2 the pure model exhibits a fluctuation-driven first order transition, characterised by runaway renormalisation group behaviour. We show that the addition of weak randomness acts to stabilise these flows, in such a way that the trajectories ultimately flow back towards the pure decoupled Ising fixed point, with the usual critical exponents α = 0, ν = 1, apart from logarithmic corrections. We also show by examples that, in higher dimensions, such transitions may either become continuous or remain first order in the presence of randomness.

Quenched Randomness at First-Order Transitions

A rigorous theorem due to Aizenman and Wehr asserts that there can be no latent heat in a two-dimensional system with quenched random impurities. We examine this result, and its possible extensions to higher dimensions, in the context of several models. For systems whose pure versions undergo a strong first-order transition, we show that there is an asymptotically exact mapping to the random fi...

New fluctuation-driven phase transitions and critical phenomena in unconventional superconductors

Using the renormalization group method, new type of fluctuation-driven first order phase transitions and critical phenomena are predicted for certain classes of ferromagnetic superconductors and superfluids with unconventional (spin-triplet) Cooper pairing. The problem for the quantum phase transitions at extremely low and zero temperatures is also discussed. The results can be applied to a wid...

Se p 20 05 Critical behaviour of thin films with quenched impurities

The critical behaviour of thin films containing quenched random impurities and inhomogeneities is investigated by the renormalization–group method to the one–loop order within the framework of the n–component φ–model. The finite–size crossover in impure films has been consdered on the basis of the fundamental relationship between the effective dimensionality Deff and the characteristic lengths o...

The Effect of Added Mass Fluctuation on Heave Vibration of TLP

The resulting motion in waves can be considered as a superposition of the motion of the body in still water and the forces on the restrained body. In this study the effect of added mass fluctuation on vertical vibration of TLP in the case of vibration in still water for both free and forced vibration subjected to axial load at the top of the leg is presented. This effect is more important when ...

Quantum fluctuations and glassy behavior of electrons near metal-insulator transitions

Glassy behavior is a generic feature of electrons close to disorder-driven metal-insulator transitions. Deep in the insulating phase, electrons are tightly bound to impurities, and thus classical models for electron glasses have long been used. As the metallic phase is approached, quantum fluctuations become more important, as they control the electronic mobility. In this paper we review recent...
